What's So Great About Two Moon Lodge,The Wilderness Adventure Lodge, Lake Kipawa, Quebec, Canada
home

"I have been lucky to have had the chance to guide clients to some of the world's most stunning lakes and rivers in my almost 20 years as a commercial wilderness guide. From Labrador or Gaspe to Northern Manitoba or the Arctic Tundra, I have fished spectacular waters, and saw some breathtaking scenery. But when it came time to choose one place to make my summer home, it was Two Moon Point on Lake Kipawa. In my mind, there is no place that balances easy accessibility with the true spirit of the Canadian wilderness."

-Dave Morin, Two Moon Lodge

So, What's So Great About Two Moon Lodge?

200,000 Years in the Making
Long ago, North America was under a mile thick sheet of ice. The fishing wasn't very good back then, but what was happening under the ice sheet was creating ideal conditions for what would later be Two Moon Point. A river of melting glacier water ran under the ice and along its course, rocks, gravel and sand where deposited. When the glacier retreated, it left a feature called an Esker on the ancient river bed. Where the rest of Lake Kipawa sits on Pre-Cambrian bedrock, the area adjacent to Two Moon Lodge has the glacial sand and gravel deposits. This unique feature creates perfect habitat for Walleye and Lake Trout underwater, and excellent structure to hold fish. On land, it created Two Moon Point, and flat, sandy point jutting into the rocky deeps of Lake Kipawa. The place was so ideal that it was the site of the first lodge in the area. In the 1920's Americans would travel by train and steamer to Two Moon point to enjoy the Kipawa's charm (and drink during the Prohibition). In short, it is the "A+ campsite". Canoeists will understand this: the perfect place on a trip, where you never want to leave.

The A+ campsite:

  • Flat ground (best camping),
  • Sandy bottom (great swimming),
  • Huge pines with no underbrush (easy walking),
  • South facing point (cooling summer breeze, sheltered from the cold North wind),
  • East exposure (to watch the sunrise)
  • West-facing (for those mind-blowing sunsets)
  • Open enough (sunshine all day)
  • Shaded enough (for afternoon naps)
  • Breezy (few mosquitoes and blackflies)
  • Sheltered by an island (to not be too windy)
  • Private (no neighbouring camps for miles and miles)
  • Great fishing close by
  • A choir of Canadian Loons to sing you to sleep

Number One with A Bolete
Nature lovers will appreciate the diversity created by the Esker environment. The sandy soil is ideal conditions for red and white pine, jackpine and white spruce. Below the canopy, the shaded forest floor is carpeted with luscious mushrooms, many of them edible Boletes. Where the sun squeaks through, ferns, wildflowers and saplings grow. This is perfect habitat for songbirds, ruffed grouse, marten and hare. Our resident moose feed and bed beneath the pine and spruce canopy, and visit the ponds and marshes for water and food.

Definitely Not "Cottage Country"
When you sit, looking out over Loon Bay, its hard to believe that a few hundred kilometers South is one of the most over-developed and crowded cottage areas. While here, hardly a boat ever passes Two Moon Point. Perhaps its only a matter of time before the masses discover how close Lake Kipawa actually is, but for now, we'll enjoy being a hundred years behind Muskoka.
Experience, Dedication and Service
When Field & Stream Magazine did their cover story feature on the top guides in North America, Two Moon Lodge director Dave Morin was number 1. When clients wanted to be safely led through the harsh environment of a raging Northern river, for 19 years they trusted, again and again, Dave and Julie Morin. When television and film producers needed someone to organize and lead a remote location shoot, the Morins got the job done. Now, Two Moon Lodge, the Wilderness Adventure Lodge, is their passion. One can rest assured that with the Morin family dedicated to serving only a few lodge guests at a time, a stay at Two Moon Lodge will exceed expectations.
